The Matsumae (MIF) Fellowship in Japan for 2025 is a fully funded opportunity. It is open to individuals who hold a Ph.D. degree. Eligibility Criteria

  • Hold a Ph.D. degree: Applicants should have completed a doctoral degree or be scheduled to receive one by the time of enrollment in Japan.
  • Obtain an acceptance letter from a host institution: Applicants must secure a Letter of Acceptance (or Provisional Letter of Acceptance) from a Japanese university or research institution willing to host their research.
  • Age requirement: Applicants must be 45 years old or younger as of April 1st of the year of the scholarship application.
  • No prior work experience in Japan: Candidates who have not previously worked or studied in Japan as a student, researcher, or employee for a total of six months or more are eligible to apply.

Benefits

  • Monthly allowance: A monthly stipend of JPY 220,000 is provided to cover living expenses during the scholarship period.
  • Arrival fund: A one-time arrival allowance of JPY 120,000 is provided to assist with the initial settlement expenses upon arrival in Japan.
  • Round-trip airfare: The scholarship covers the cost of round-trip economy class airfare between the recipient’s home country and Japan. The airfare is provided at the beginning and end of the scholarship period.
  • Overseas travel insurance: Successful applicants are provided with overseas travel insurance that includes medical treatment coverage during their stay in Japan.
